The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max may have an always-on display.
In his latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says iOS 16 may finally include a feature for always-on displays.
However, this new feature will not be available on all 4 iPhone models in the 2022 range.
From Gurman’s newsletter:
I was told that iOS 16 will integrate support for an always-on lock screen, something Apple originally planned for last year’s iPhone 13. This would allow the iPhone to significantly reduce the frame rate on the lock screen and would allow users to quickly view some information.
What prevented Apple from introducing this mode on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max was the display. These two smartphones were the first iPhones to feature a 120Hz ProMotion display with variable refresh rates.
However, the iPhone’s current ProMotion displays are limited to screen refresh rates between 10Hz and 120Hz. On the other hand, the LPTO panels used by the likes of Oppo and Samsung can drop as low as 1Hz when viewing a static image or when the device is idle.
If Apple is able to evolve ProMotion technology to ensure that the refresh rate drops to a minimum of 1 Hz, it will finally be able to bring the always-on display to the iPhone.
Display analyst Ross Young recently said that the ProMotion displays used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max would be able to achieve a minimum refresh rate of 1Hz, effectively removing the hardware limitation that prevented Apple from offering. always-on mode on iPhone 13 Pro models.
