According to a new report, Apple’s first 5G modems will debut on the iPhone 2023 line.
According to Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O’Malley, the Apple-designed 5G cellular modem will debut on 2023 iPhone models.
In a research note, analysts said chip makers Qorvo and Broadcom should be among the companies that will benefit from switching from Qualcomm modems to in-house ones.
Several sources, including Fast Company’s Mark Sullivan and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, have reported that Apple is working on its own modem for future iPhones. Apple reportedly began modem development in 2020 after acquiring most of Intel’s modem business. Additionally, a few months ago Barclays said the modem will support both the sub-6GHz and mmWave bands of 5G .
Apple currently uses Qualcomm modems, such as the Snapdragon X55 in iPhone 12 models. In 2019, a legal agreement between Apple and Qualcomm revealed that Apple will likely use the Snapdragon X60 modem in the 2021 iPhones, followed by the Snapdragon X65 modem in the 2022 iPhones. roadmap mentioned the possibility of the 2023 iPhones using a Snapdragon X70 modem, but it now seems less likely.
Finally, the modem should be manufactured by TSMC.
