With the launch of iPhone 8 and iPhone X, Apple has extended portrait mode by introducing the light effects typical of a photo studio. Photographer Daniel DeArco used an iPhone X to compare the light effects simulated by the software with the real ones of a photo studio by making a video.

Previously, a similar experiment was performed with iPhone 8 Plus, and the first thing to note is that the iPhone X is able to apply the effects in the best way. The new camera module also got a higher score than the 8 Plus on DxOMark.

The photographer’s conclusion is that the iPhone X could do more but somehow the effects were limited by Apple. With future update could be accentuated for even better results. Ultimately the shots made with the real light in the studio are better but Daniel DeArco considers the new portrait mode really good.
