Here’s how Apple will be able to revolutionize its music streaming service starting in June. We are confident that subscribers will grow rapidly and will soon overtake Spotify

We had announced it well in advance thanks to everything that had been discovered by analyzing the iOS 14.6 beta code but now the official announcement has finally arrived : Apple Music is about to change its face and in a month it will become the best streaming music service available .

Apple just announced that it will bring Space Audio with Dolby Atmos support to Apple Music. In addition, 75 million songs will be available in high quality through an uncompressed, lossless file format without incurring an additional cost to subscribers. These new features will be available starting in June.

Spatial audio with Dolby Atmos support

Initially there will be a few hundred songs that will support spatial audio with Dolby Atmos on Apple Music. This will offer users a revolutionary experience because, through supported headphones such as the AirPods Pro , users will be able to hear musical instruments and voices from all directions , at 360 °, just as they would be able to hear when physically in a recording studio. Apple will work with artists and record companies to expand the catalog of songs with spatial audio more and more over time.

Lossless audio

Lossless audio, or high definition audio, will instead be offered for all 75 million songs in the Apple Music catalog . This is the ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) format which preserves every single bit of the original audio. Spotify will also offer a similar service but will have an additional cost for users. Conversion to Apple Music will instead be automatic and free for all subscribers to the service.

To start listening to music in high definition you will have to go to Settings> Music> Audio Quality and define the option according to your needs and considering the fact that high definition could consume more data, so we recommend a listen or a download offline when covered by a WiFi network. That option will be available with iOS 14.6 which will be released next month.

Some songs in high definition will be transmitted in “CD quality” or 16bit at 44.1 kHz, others will have an even higher quality that reaches 24bit and 48 kHz and finally some songs will reach 24bit and 192 kHz but for these users will have to explicitly provide consent because each song will put a lot of strain on the data plan and on the memory it will occupy in the device.

In short, Apple Music has made the great leap in quality and has managed to do so while maintaining the cost for users unchanged. The high definition service will be available from June on both iOS and Android. With this move, Apple Music now offers something more than its competitors, that something that represents the “quality” for which, even if many people, in a completely subjective way, will continue to prefer the Spotify interface, from June Apple Music it will in effect be the best streaming music service from an objective point of view.
