Instagram is developing the Usage Insights tool for its social media platform that will let users know how much time they spend on the application.

Following the recent discovery of pieces of code hidden within Instagram for Android-related to some time management functions, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has confirmed that the new tools are actually under development and will soon be implemented on the platform :

It’s true. We are creating tools that will help the IG community to learn more about the time spent on Instagram, which should be positive and intentional. Understanding how online time affects people is important, and it is the responsibility of all companies to be honest about it. We want to be part of the solution. I take this responsibility seriously “.

The incoming feature reflects a recent trend by large technology companies to recognize the unhealthy habits their products can promote, especially among younger users. Instagram, which we remember to be owned by Facebook, joins Google and Apple who have confirmed the development of methods to encourage a more significant presence online and to contrast, instead, the dependence on smartphones and internal t.

Last week, Google announced several tools to help users better manage the time spent on their devices’ screens. These include a new “do not disturb” mode that makes it easier to ignore notifications and a mode that gradually changes the color of the screen to grayscale, reducing the brightness as the time approaches for sleep.

Earlier this year, Apple received an open letter from two major investors asking the company to do more to reduce the growing smartphone dependency among children. The letter cited several studies related to the negative effects of smartphones and social media on children’s mental and physical health, inviting Apple to offer more tools to prevent damage.

In a note sent to the Wall Street JournalApple stated that it “reflects deeply” on how its products are used and on the impact they have on users and the people around them:

We take this responsibility very seriously and are committed to meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations, especially when it comes to protecting children. “

The fruits of Apple’s commitment may begin to be seen starting next month when, at the Worldwide Developers Conference, iOS 12 will be presented in all probability : in the new firmware, in fact, Apple plans to offer an updated parental control, with the new Digital Health, the tool that will allow parents to know how long their children spend with iOS devices in their hands.
