According to a report shared by Financial Times, LG Display could become an Apple supplier for OLED displays. The panels produced for 2018 would be entirely dedicated to a hypothetical iPhone X Plus.
The OLED panels of the iPhone X were entirely produced by Samsung. The quality of the panels of this South Korean company is really excellent, so much so that Apple has virtually no choice to select this supplier. This year, however, things could change, thanks to the production of LG Display.
This year, LG Display produced LCD panels dedicated to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but according to a recent report, the company is also working on 15 million OLED panels for 2018. LG Display will probably support Samsung in providing displays for the iPhone this year. In particular, according to the report in question, Samsung will produce the OLED panels for the 5.8-inch iPhone X, while LG for the 6.1-inch “Plus” model.
Obviously, the two companies use different construction techniques, which could lead to small differences between one display and another. Clearly, Apple will want to minimize them as much as possible to avoid future criticism from users. Samsung, however, currently remains undoubtedly the best manufacturer of this technology, so LG will have to commit even more to fill this difference in quality.
