70% of smartphones shipped to the United States in the second quarter of 2020 are manufactured in China

Through a new report,  Canalys shares its estimates for smartphone shipments to the United States. The data crowns Apple as the big winner with iPhone sales on the rise during the pandemic, despite the country’s global smartphone market seeing a drop in shipments.

Canalys data shows iPhone shipments to the US grew 10% in the second quarter compared to the same period last year, for a total of 15 million shipments, a new quarterly record.

Apple and Samsung accounted for 7 out of 10 devices sold and the Cupertino giant set a new national record in the second quarter, selling 15 million iPhones. It shipped 15% more iPhone 11 than last year’s best-seller, the iPhone XR.

In addition to strong shipments of the iPhone 11, Canalys notes that the  2020 iPhone SE helped increase the company’s US market share for the quarter to nearly 50%.

Samsung came in second with less than half of Apple’s shipments, 7.4 million (down 1%) and LG came in third with 3.5 million units shipped (down 19%).
