iOS 15.4 beta 1 introduces big news regarding unlocking the iPhone with Face ID while we wear the mask.
iOS 15.4 introduces a new feature designed to allow Face ID to be used with a mask even without having an Apple Watch.
Face ID normally works by scanning the eyes and nose, with a series of triangular projections that take into account the distance between the eyes and the tip of the nose, the size of the latter, and so on. With iOS 15.4 the process improves and our iPhone will perform a better iris scan, which will be enough to recognize the owner of the device even when the nose is covered with a mask.
If we choose to use this feature, we will need to scan our face again for Face ID. Next, Face ID will be able to unlock our iPhone even when we wear a mask.
Face ID Configuration Guide with Mask:
We go to Settings > Face ID and Code and enter our unlock code.
Once the menu is opened, we enable “Use Face ID with a Mask” and add our face. You will not need to wear a mask during setup, on the contrary, your face will have to be free.
Next, we can also configure a different look of our face when we wear glasses.
The process is very familiar and simple, similar to the first Face ID configuration.
Apple warns that Face ID is “more accurate” when it is set only for full facial recognition. For unlocking with the mask to work, we need to look at our device to unlock it and it doesn’t work when we wear sunglasses.
