The future of Apple’s most successful product is in question: in its place devices with functions related to augmented reality?

The latest note from Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple expert, concerns the debut of Apple’s first augmented reality headset by the end of 2022 . Well, in the same document the analyst launches a prediction on the future… of the iPhone !

Apple today also focuses a lot on services – Apple Music and Apple TV + for example -, but its spearhead is undoubtedly iPhone. The success of other products (Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods) is absolutely not in question, but it is the smartphone on the market since 2007 that has attracted the attention of users the most.

But will it always be like this?

According to Ming-Chi Kuo , Apple’s future is linked to augmented reality and the success of the devices that will support it , such as the upcoming headset. With that in mind, iPhone retirement (hard to believe today) will take place within ten years:

Apple’s goal is to replace the iPhone with an AR device within 10 years. […] At the moment, there are more than one billion active iPhone users. If Apple’s goal is to replace the iPhone with augmented reality in ten years, that means Apple will sell at least one billion AR devices in ten years.

The success of AR headsets will depend on some factors, such as total independence from other products, mainly iPhones and Macs:

If the AR headset is only positioned on the market as a Mac or iPhone accessory, it will not drive product growth. An AR headset that works independently, on the other hand, means it has its own ecosystem and is able to provide the most complete and flexible user experience.

What do you think of Kuo’s prediction? Do you think it really is Apple’s intention to replace its most successful product (iPhone) with an AR device?
