According to a new report, Apple will start production of the iPhone 12 in India in the second half of 2021, with the devices targeting the local market.
Apple’s manufacturing partner Wistron will reportedly build iPhone 12 models in India starting in the second half of 2021. The devices will be manufactured at the company’s Narsapura facility and will be destined for the local market.
From the Business Standard report :
Increasing its production drive in India, the American tech giant plans to launch locally produced iPhone 12 models in the country by the middle of next year, sources close to the development said. This will be the seventh iPhone model made in India, giving a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar vision.
Earlier last month, it emerged that the iPhone 11 was also being produced in the country, marking the first time a flagship iPhone has been produced outside of China.
According to the report, Apple also plans to begin production of the iPhone SE in the country by the end of 2020. Again, it will initially serve the local market.
The previous iPhone 11 production report stated that Apple may consider exporting its India-made iPhones to other markets in the future. However, at this stage, iPhone manufacturing in India mainly serves to counter the strict and heavy import duties on products in the country.
Apple is reportedly saving around 22% on import duties by selling India-made iPhones to India . Its manufacturing partners also benefit from the favorable incentives offered by the government in exchange for relocating their business to India, paying companies up to 6%.
Apple recently made heavy investments in India-based manufacturing, driven not only by the government’s encouragement of incentives but also by the need to diversify its supply chain following the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted many the dangers of concentrating your supply chain in one region.
