Apple has released a new support document aimed at those with an iPhone. The Cupertino giant claims that particular vibrations, such as those generated by motorcycle engines , can damage the cameras of its smartphones.
IPhone cameras with optical image stabilization (OIS) and autofocus (AF) are those most at risk from the use of the gyroscope and other sensors that help compensate for motion and vibration when taking photos and recording videos .
IPhone’s OIS and AF systems are built to last. However, as is the case with many consumer electronic devices that include systems such as optical image stabilization, long-term direct exposure to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges can undermine the performance of such systems and lead to a reduction of image quality in photos and videos.
Given the risk, Apple recommends avoiding direct contact between iPhones and the frame or handlebars of motorcycles.
Difficult to give an explanation to the timing of this notice, given that the two systems in question are not news of the last hour (the OIS, for example, is already present on the iPhone 7 of 2016).
