According to Business Insider, Apple is using new cars to collect the data needed for its map service.

Apple wants to get the most detail in their maps with the “Street View” mode. For this reason, it is sampling with new cars and 360-degree cameras. The new vehicles have been sighted on the streets of Los Angeles. Curiously Apple uses the same vehicle also used by Google for the competing maps service.

According to Eddy Cue, Apple wants to create the best mapping service. For this reason, it must sample all the data from scratch and then apply a software optimization necessary to keep everything in order. We’ll see if in the next few years it will succeed in imposing itself on Google Maps, which is currently the objectively better service.
