Apple has hired the now former head of the Google AI section John Giannandrea, reports The New York Times. The news came from an internal email from Tim Cook, in which he wrote that ” John shares our focus on privacy and our thoughtful approach to creating increasingly intelligent and personal computers “.
This is a big “hit” for Apple, as the company in the artificial intelligence industry seems to have been overtaken by competition (see Google Assistant and Alexa of Amazon). Despite being the first to launch a smart virtual assistant on a large scale, Siri, many experts believe that the battle has been lost to date.
John Giannandrea joined Google in 2010, following the acquisition of Metaweb, and has since been responsible for integrating AI into products like Gmail, Google Search, and Google Assistant. At Apple, he will lead the team that deals with machine learning and, of course, with artificial intelligence.
