Affected devices were sold between October 2016 and February 2018. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Center will repair affected MacBook Pro units free of charge.
Apple has extended its 13-inch MacBook Pro display backlight service program to five years.
Previously, the program covered machines up to “four years after the unit was first retailed”. The new terms state that eligible models can be repaired up to “five years after the unit was first retailed or 3 years after this program’s start date”.
The program applies to devices sold between October 2016 and February 2018 that have the following issues:
- The backlight of the display shows, always or intermittently, vertical bright areas along the bottom of the screen
- The display backlight stops working completely
To identify your computer model and see if it is eligible for this program, just click on the Apple logo in the upper right ()> About This Mac. Eligible models are listed below.
- MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2016, four Thunderbolt 3 ports;
- MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
Apple launched its display backlight service program in May 2019, allowing a small number of 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro users to fix a backlight issue on their devices.
The problem with bright and dark spots at the bottom of the screen may be because Apple used flimsy flex cables instead of metal cables, which wear out over time. This can cause portions of the backlight to stop displaying or stop it completely.
Apple or an authorized service provider will replace the display on affected 13-inch MacBook Pro units, free of charge . To initiate the repair process, visit the support page on the company’s website.
