emoji-diversity

Apple’s latest system software has hit developer hands today, with iOS 8.3 beta 2 on its way out now. For the moment, this is still dev-only; the rumors of public participation in iOS betas will still have to wait, and to be fair we heard those wouldn’t be coming until next month, anyway. As those with access to the beta start updating their devices and taking a look at what’s new, a big push forward towards adding some much-needed diversity in modern messaging is being noticed, as Apple expands its emoji support to add a veritable rainbow of new skin tones.

From white to black and everywhere in between, iOS 8.3 beta 2 brings a series of new skin tones to its previously white-dominated (well, also yellow, if we’re counting smilies) racial breakdown.

Beyond those, this broader theme of inclusion continues with the availability of new emoji depicting flags for additional nations. It’s not just iOS 8.3 beta 2 getting all this, either, and the new OS X 10.10.3 sees its own emoji support similarly grow. Most of us will still be waiting a few more weeks before this is all public, but it’s on its way.
