Apple would be interested in Sony’s next-generation 3D sensors, which could be integrated into the next iPhone.
These chips will power the next 3D front and rear cameras in several phones that will be launched in 2019.
“Cameras have revolutionized phones and, based on what I’ve seen, I have the same expectations for 3D,” says Satoshi Yoshihara, one of the managers who leads Sony’s work on sensors. “The pace varies according to the field, but we will certainly see the adoption of 3D. I’m sure.”
Yoshihara does not mention companies – like Apple – interested in adopting the new Sony sensors, but confirmed that the business will be very important right from 2019.
Reportedly, the new Sony sensor differs from Apple’s current TrueDepth 3D detection technology, offering greater accuracy over distance. The approach used by Sony is defined as a ” time of flight ” method , in which laser pulses are sent and then measured to see how long they will take to go back.
An article for Bloomberg Quint shows how it could be used:
“During the interview, Sony showed several examples using a custom phone with a 3D camera on the back. In one app, users made specific gestures to cast spells in a virtual game. In another, the phone calculated the depth of the room and accurately displayed a virtual goldfish swimming in and out of real-life objects. “
Obviously, there is no guarantee that this technology will enter the next-generation iPhone. However, it looks promising – as well as suggesting that the 2019 iPhone could include both front and front 3D depth detection cameras.
