According to a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is
considering abandoning aluminum as a material to make the body of the iPhone, presumably
returning to the glass like the iPhone 4s.
If the hypothesis were to be confirmed, however, the change would not affect the iPhone 7,
whose launch is planned for September this year. According to Kuo fact, Apple would have in
mind to differentiate its smartphones from the growing number of competing devices made of aluminum.
How to do it? Returning to tread the footprints left with iPhone 4S, with the body of the device made of glass which would improve the competitiveness and innovation of the next iPhone.
“If iPhone 7 would still use an aluminum case, would be the fact, it would seem there is no feeling of “fifth consecutive year and freshness to be leveraged to attract consumers. In addition many of
Apple’s competitors have adopted the aluminum case then iPhone has lost any advantage over competitors because of the lack of differentiation. For 2017 it is logical to expect a change, abandoning the aluminum in an effort to improve the competitiveness of the smartphone of Cupertino, offering a new design.”
The adoption of the glass as a material for the iPhone houses could increase the weight of the device, making it more fragile plus if dropped, but regarding the lightness, the analyst argues that AMOLED screens will in part compensate for the weight of the device.
“There are already other competitors that use or have used the glass to realize their smartphone.
The fragility test is not a problem. As it regards the weight instead, with the transition from aluminum
to glass the difference would be really minimal and could be compensated with the use of the AMOLED display, thinner and lighter.”
According to some rumors, Apple could introduce an iPhone with OLED screen in 2017 whose providers may be Samsung , LG Display, AU Optronics, Japan Display and Sharp belonging to Foxconn. According to Kuo, there will be at least one model with a 5.8 “curved AMOLED display.
