Apple has reportedly asked TSMC to increase production of A13 chips to keep up with iPhone 11 demand.
Apple has asked Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to increase the production of the A-series chips that are used in the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max due to higher than expected demand.
The report says that demand for the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro ” is outperforming Apple’s market and expectations .” In turn, the Cupertino giant is asking TSMC to increase the production of the A13 processor to meet this demand. One person who spoke with Bloomberg specifically cited the entry-level iPhone 11 as ” a particular driver of growing demand “.
Another reason why Apple is increasing production is for the imminent launch of a new low-cost iPhone model . As reported many times, this device will feature a design similar to the iPhone 8, but with Apple’s latest A13 processor inside.
In the meantime, this fall ‘s iPhone 12 lineup is expected to feature Apple’s next-generation iteration of series A, probably called the A14 . According to a recent supply chain report , TSMC plans to start production of the A14 processor using a new 5-nanometer process in the second quarter. The A13 was produced with a 7 nm processor, so A14 should be more energy efficient and faster , thanks to the 5 nm process.
Various analysts have said that the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro are selling better than expected, especially the iPhone 11. CIRP’s new data, released earlier this week , said that the combination of iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max accounted for 69% of all iPhones sold between October and December 2019.
