Apple previewed watchOS 7 , which brings new customization tools and powerful new health and fitness features to the world’s most advanced smartwatch. Now users can customize their Apple Watch like never before, with dials to share and many options to discover new ones. Added to this are the sleep monitoring functions , hand washing detection , new types of workouts including dance , and a new hearing health function , which allow you to have an even more detailed picture of the state of well-being general.

Developers can now offer multiple complications for each app in a single quadrant : for example, Glow Baby can show various complications that help new parents monitor breastfeeding and breastfeeding, feedstuff statistics and hours of sleep, while Patrol can show information on tides, wind speed and water temperature in surfers’ favorite beaches.

Sleep

With watchOS 7, Apple Watch allows users to monitor sleep with a holistic approach, thanks to useful tools that help you sleep for the right hours, go to bed regularly and create a preparatory routine to achieve the desired sleep goals. The watch’s accelerometer detects the micro-movements due to sleep breathing allowing Apple Watch to intelligently understand when and how long the user sleeps every night. In the morning, the user will see the data relating to the previous night with also the periods of wakefulness and sleep, and a graph showing the weekly sleep trend.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a good bedtime routine helps the body prepare for sleep. To this end, Wind Down allows Apple Watch and iPhone users to create a personalized routine , for example by setting a specific scene in the Home app, listening to relaxing music or using their favorite meditation app. When in Sleep mode, Apple Watch activates the Do Not Disturb feature and automatically darkens the screen at night .To help users wake up, Apple Watch offers a silent haptic alarm or gentle sounds, while the wake-up screen shows the battery level. Depending on personal charging habits, if the battery is too discharged before going to sleep, Apple Watch will remind the user to recharge it in time. Sleep data is encrypted on your device or iCloud if synchronization is turned on, and the user always has full control over it.

Automatic detection of hand washing

Washing your hands well for at least 20 seconds can help prevent the spread of disease. And Apple Watch does its part also in this area, offering an innovation never seen on a wearable device: thanks to the movement sensors, the microphone and the automatic learning integrated in the watch, it automatically detects the typical movements and sounds of this activity . He then starts a 20 second timer and, if the user finishes early, invites him to continue. Apple Watch can also remind the user to wash their hands when they return home. The Health app on the iPhone will show the frequency and duration of each hand wash , along with information on the importance of this habit related to overall well-being. Sounds detected while washing your hands are not automatically recorded or saved by the Health app or Apple Watch.

Types of workouts and fitness apps

The Training app is one of the most used on Apple Watch, and with watchOS 7 four new fantastic types of workout are added with powerful ad hoc algorithms to detect movements and heart rate: Core Training, Dance, Functional Strength Training and Cooldown. To correctly calculate the calorie consumption during the dance, Apple Watch uses multiple sources, combining the data of the heart beat sensor with those of the accelerometer and the gyroscope, which is responsible for measuring the various arm and body movements typical of the dance. This type of workout has been verified and tested with four of the most famous dance styles: bollywood, cardio dance, hip-hop and Latin.

The redesigned Activities app on the iPhone, which is now called Fitness, offers an intuitive overview of daily data relating to the activity, workouts, rewards and trends in one panel, while Activity Sharing and Activity Challenges appear in another.

hearing

After the introduction of the Noise app with watchOS 6, which measures the sound levels in the environment and the exposure time, watchOS 7 offers additional help for hearing health thanks to the notifications relating to the sound of the earphones. Customers can now know how high the volume of multimedia content listened to through headphones connected to their iPhone, iPod touch or Apple Watch, and when certain levels can have negative effects over time.If the total hours of listening with the earphones reach the weekly safety threshold, Apple Watch warns the user. The threshold is based on the indications of the World Health Organization according to which, for example, a person can be exposed to a volume of 80 decibels for about 40 per week without damage to hearing. In the Health app on iPhone, customers can also see how long they have been exposed to high decibel levels each week and set a maximum earphone volume. Sounds detected by the earphone audio notification feature are not recorded or saved by the Health app or Apple Watch.

Other new features in watchOS 7

  • For maximum convenience, cyclists can now have directions directly on their wrist. The indications are clearly visible and easy to read and Maps can even indicate when to get off the bike to carry it by hand, or when to take the stairs to save time. The user can choose a route without large slopes, the fastest one or the most linear one.
  • Now customers can use Siriper to translate words into many languages from the comfort of their wrist; the dictation function is managed on the device thanks to Apple’s Neural Engine which guarantees faster and more reliable processing when dictating messages or other; in addition, Apple Watch also supports reading messages with Siri. The Quick Commands app is now available on Apple Watch, including through a complication.
  • Developers can create graphical complications with SwiftUI, and thanks to new development tools such as Xcode Previews it will be even easier.
  • New complications for native features include: remote camera control, sleep and quick commands.
  • The new movement parameters available in the Health app include: low intensity cardio training, walking speed, stair descent speed, stair climbing speed, distance covered in six minutes of walking, double rest time, step length and asymmetry. These parameters are important for the medical community as they allow monitoring of patients’ ability to move safely and smoothly as they age. These are measurements usually made in the laboratory, but which can be easily detected by Apple Watch and iPhone, and used by developers such as Zimmer Biomet, a company specializing in musculoskeletal well-being, for patient care and in management tools such as mymobility.
