The AirPods firmware, released in December, worsens the noise cancellation of the new Apple earphones
On December 16, Apple released a new firmware update for AirPods Pro bringing the firmware from 2B588 to 2C54 . After the updates, there have been several reports that AirPods Pro’s noise cancellation may have been adversely affected by the update . Apple has since withdrawn the 2C54 update, so not all AirPods Pro Tuents could have the latest update.
Users asked the RTINGS.com technical review site to reassess their previous AirPods Pro tests with the new update to confirm any changes to the new firmware.
RTINGS has published its results and confirms that the 2C54 firmware objectively worsens AirPods Pro’s active noise cancellation function:
10/01/2020 Update: After updating to the 2C54 firmware, we tested the headphones again and our results showed a fairly significant drop in isolation performance, mainly in the bass range. This means that with the ANC turned on, the headphones do not block low-engine noise from planes or buses as they did before this update.
However the new firmware also brings some improvements. In other test areas, the 2C54 firmware appears to improve performance in terms of frequency response and bass accuracy .
Apple withdrew the 2C54 firmware only a few days after its release, so it is allegedly working on the problems described. To find out which firmware version is installed on Airpods Pro just go to Settings> General> Information> AirPods Pro.
