LG has increased the production of triple-lens cameras for the 2019 iPhones, according to a report on the supply chain.
The report states that the company, which is Apple’s main supplier of camera modules, has quadrupled its staff during the summer.
ETNews industry sources say the optical solution’s corporate department has hired a large number of workers in the second quarter, from 200 at the end of March to 880 at the end of June. Since it is believed that Apple is LG Innotek’s main customer, it is assumed that new employees are involved in the production of camera modules.
The increase in employment follows the previous plans of the company for short-term workers, wherein 2018 the number of employees rose from 612 in March to 1,275 at the end of June.
The timing seems to go hand in hand with other Apple suppliers, which increase the number of employees in view of complete production cycles. For example, assembly partner Foxconn began recruiting more staff in July, as well as offering cash prizes to existing employees to stay in the company.
In the third quarter of 2018, LG earned $ 1.91 billion in sales and $ 107 million in operating income, making it the best third-quarter performance in the company’s history and leading to annual sales of $ 6.59 billion. It is not known how much of this is attributed to Apple, but it is likely that a significant part is derived from the iPhone’s camera modules.
The 2019 iPhones should have three cameras on the back instead of two, while the successor to the iPhone XR will be upgraded from one to two cameras. Current speculations suggest that the third camera will be an ultra-wide lens.
