With the now-finalized 5G standard, companies that have developed the technology are making the necessary decision on selling prices. For Apple, adding the 5G to the new iPhone could cost the company $ 21 a device, according to VentureBeat.
According to the report from VentureBeat, Nokia will grant a license to its 5G standard for $ 3.48 per device. This is a much lower commission than rivals such as Ericsson and Qualcomm apply for the license. Ericsson has announced that the price of its technology license varies between $ 2.50 and $ 5, depending on the cost of the device. Qualcomm, on the other hand, is willing to grant licenses on 5G technology patents for 2.275% of the total price of a single-mode smartphone, instead, it passes to 3.25% for multi-mode smartphones.
Of the estimated $ 21 for each device that Apple and other companies will have to pay in royalty for the 5G, $ 13 would go to Qualcomm. And these do not include fees that would go to other 5G patent holders such as Samsung and Huawei.
The 5G standard, which guarantees a speed 100 times higher than that of 4G, is currently tested by operators such as T-Mobile and AT & T (in the USA), and Vodafone and TIM in Italy. The first devices compatible with the new standard will be launched on the market in the coming months, however, the first iPhone with the supposed 5G should not arrive before 2019/2020.
