The Foxconn production unit was commissioned to assemble the phones in the country.
A report last week reported that a Foxconn facility had started producing the iPhone XR in India, and a new photo confirms it. The Wall Street Journal shared a photo of an iPhone XR box printed with the tag “Designed by Apple in California, assembled in India “
Foxconn’s Indian production unit was commissioned to assemble the phones locally, which also meets the government’s procurement rules. This will also help Apple open its retail stores in India in the near future.
The units are presumably not intended for export but will be sold in the country.
Apple is only a small part of the Indian market, partly because the government charges 20% on high-end phones imported in the hope of forcing companies to produce them locally. It seems that this move has paid off, with the start of production of the iPhone XR in the country. Apple can now sell the device at a lower price by removing fees
In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi would have convinced Apple to produce iPhone units for export to Europe earlier this year. Apple is trying to expand production outside of China as the trade war between that country and the United States deepens.
Additional incentives are created for smartphone companies that manufacture in India for export.
