Is the end of WhatsApp really coming?
Following the controversy over WhatsApp’s new privacy policies, several users around the world have been looking for an alternative to the Facebook-owned app.
Telegram, which is already one of the most popular messaging platforms, is now working on a new tool that allows users to import chats from WhatsApp and other apps.
The new feature was accidentally released on the App Store as part of version 7.4 of the app, but another update was later released where mentions to the migration tool were removed, suggesting that Telegram is still working on this function.
However, 9to5Mac was able to try the new migration tool in the official Telegram app for iOS to see how it works. According to the 7.4 update changelog, users will be able to import chats from WhatsApp, Line, KakaoTalk and other unspecified apps.
As for WhatsApp, the chat migration procedure is very simple. Once the app is started, in fact, just enter the “Other” menu in a chat on WhatsApp and choose the “Export chat” option. WhatsApp will generate a ZIP file with the entire conversation which can be exported to Telegram via the iOS share sheet.
Next, Telegram will ask us which contact or group we want to associate that chat with, then the messages will be synchronized for both us and the other person. All imported messages are labeled as such.
