The company officially unveiled the PlayStation 5, with new designs, accessories and more, but did not reveal the launch date and price.

After months of rumors, Sony has finally unveiled the design of the next generation PlayStation 5 . He actually unveiled two consoles, a standard edition and a digital edition without an optical drive .

The PlayStation 5 has an elegant design dominated by white panels on both sides that enclose a curved black interior. The central part has what looks like standard USB-A port and a USB-C port on the front with blue LED lighting and vents along the upper curve. The back of the console remains a mystery for now.

The PS5 is placed inside a vertical stand, something that Sony has always had for its consoles starting from the PS2. It is not yet known whether this stand is part of the design or a separate accessory.

The two consoles are distinguished by the lack of the 4K UHD Blu-ray drive on the Digital Edition. This model is thinner and has a more symmetrical design while the standard edition is more voluminous.

The general aesthetic of the design is exactly the kind of extravagance that one would expect from each new generation of PlayStation, perfectly matching the design of the DualSense controller . Compared to the rigorous and minimal design of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 looks like something sci-fi.

Sony has also unveiled a range of accessories for the new consoles. We have already become familiar with the aforementioned Dual Sense controller, which will feature tactile feedback and a built-in microphone . There will also be a charging station to simultaneously charge two Dual Sense controllers, an HD video camera for possible motion detection, a new 3D Pulse wireless headset and, finally, a multimedia remote control for using the console as a Blu-ray player and streaming box.

Sony has also unveiled many new games, including Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village, NBA 2K21, Deathloop, Hitman III and many more. There is also an update for GTA V, which will get additional content, technical improvements, visual updates and performance improvements when released on PS5 in the second half of 2021.

The company has slowly provided more information on its next generation of PS5 in recent months. The console will arrive during the holiday season and is powered by an eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU and a custom AMD RDNA 2 based GPU . Sony announced the PS5 specification in March and the custom AMD chips will provide 10.28 teraflops of power using variable frequencies on both the CPU and GPU.

Sony is also using a proprietary SSD solution to decrease game loading times. The SSD will provide 825 GB of storage space . The company requires that all games be installed on the internal SSD to take advantage of the read speed. Epic Games recently offered an extraordinary technological demonstration of Unreal 5 running on PS5, showing the loading of 8K cinematic resources and dynamic lighting effects. The PS5 also support graphic 8K , graphic 4K at a refresh rate of 120Hz and 3D audio .

The PS5 will also support a ” vast majority ” of the over 4,000 PlayStation 4 titles that exist today. ” We expect titles compatible with previous versions to run at a higher frequency on PS5, so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions ,” Sony said in March. Ubisoft has stated that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will arrive on PlayStation 5 during the holiday season.

The new console is expected to be launched later this year and the price, as well as the launch date, remains unknown at the moment. What do you think of the new PlayStation 5? Do you like the new design?
