In an interview with CNET , Jony Ive said that his team has rejected the idea of a touchscreen Mac “many, many years ago” . The chief designer of Apple, however, has hinted that the company is working on other concepts that fall under the same category, in addition to the Touch Bar that made its debut with the new MacBook Pro.

The Touch Bar is the big news of the new MacBook Pro, and Apple has published detailed guidelines to developers suggesting  how to use that tool, and also cautioning them to understand that this is not to be considered as a second display.

Doubts about why Apple decides to adopt a touchscreen display on their Macs and / or MacBook are still many, and I’ve declined to give further information on the subject, not to be missed rumors about “things” on which the company is currently working. It is enough then to know that Apple “does not believe that a desktop touchscreen computer is particularly useful or appropriate application of multitouch”

When we approached the multitouch, so many years ago, we were trying to figure out what the right way to apply it and its opportunities. Just we realized that the Mac was not the right product for that … It was not particularly useful or appropriate application of multitouch “.

Asked why a touchscreen Mac would be inappropriate, Ive had this to say:

For a lot of practical reasons. It is difficult to talk about [laughs] without going into many details that would make me start discussing things we’re working on. Really, I will not say more on the subject.

Have your say in the comments.
