Apple plans to release three new iPhones in 2020, two high-end 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch models and a low-end 6.1-inch model, all three with OLED displays, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
In a research note obtained by MacRumors,Kuo stated that high-end models will support 5G, while the low-end model will be limited to LTE. Qualcomm should still be Apple’s main supplier of 5G modems, along with Broadcom’s RF power amplifiers as part of an agreement with Apple.
Here is an excerpt from Kuo’s research note:
We expect the iPhone 2020 line to include two 6.7-inch and 5.4-inch high-end iPhone models and a 6.1-inch low-end iPhone, with all three models having an OLED display. High-end iPhone models will support 5G. We expect that the use of each iPhone 5G in PA will be 200% more than the current number for iPhone models.
We also recall that the contents of the previous agreement of Apple and Qualcomm include the release of Qualcomm of a part of the source code of the 5G chips to Apple for the development of Apple 5G PA / FEM.
Kuo believes that starting in 2021, all new iPhones will support 5G. He also believes that Apple has its own 5G modem ready for 2022 or 2023, which should reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and Samsung.
The new 5.4 inch and 6.7-inch size suggest that Apple plans to reduce the size of the current 5.8-inch iPhone XS, a move that fans of smaller phones would appreciate while increasing the size of the current iPhone 6.5 XS Max. The size of the iPhone XR would remain unchanged.
