“If you need to replace your iPhone’s camera, it’s important that the repair is done by certified technicians using genuine Apple parts.”
In iOS 14.4, Apple introduced a feature that sends an alert notification when the camera installed on an iPhone 12 cannot be verified as an original.
In addition to introducing the aforementioned functionality, the company also shared a support document stressing the importance of having an iPhone repaired by a qualified technician using genuine parts, with warnings on what can happen when a non-Apple camera is used.
Apple says that if an iPhone camera needs to be replaced, it is important to consult a certified technician as repairs performed by non-certified technicians could cause improper operation or problems with image quality. Safety is also an issue, according to Apple, as improper repairs could potentially leave loose parts that could cause damage to the battery.
If a service provider uses non-genuine cameras, the following may also occur:
- Camera does not focus properly or images are not clear;
- When using Portrait mode, the subject may not be in focus or only partially;
- A third-party app using the camera may crash or quit unexpectedly;
- The live preview in third-party apps may appear blank or may crash.
If a repair with non-genuine parts is performed, users will see a warning in Settings> General> About which reads: “The iPhone camera cannot be verified as genuine Apple”. The warning will also appear on the lock screen for the first four days after a repair and in the Settings app for 15 days.
