A watch that goes beyond all limits is born for athletes who challenge the impossible.

Thanks to the 49mm case size and the new updated design of the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple was able to include a much larger battery on the device.

As a result, the Apple Watch Ultra has the best battery life of any Apple Watch, reaching up to 36 hours in normal use and even longer thanks to the new power-saving mode and battery optimization options.

On the product page, Apple explains that the autonomy of a day is calculated based on the following usage: 180-time checks, 180 notifications, 90 minutes of app use and 60 minutes of training with music playback from the Apple Watch via Bluetooth, in a span of 36 hours.

The Apple Watch Ultra (GPS + Cellular) models tested were connected for a total of 8 hours to an LTE network and for a total of 28 hours to an iPhone via Bluetooth, over a period of 36 hours. Testing was conducted by Apple in August 2022 using preproduction Apple Watch Ultra (GPS + Cellular) paired with an iPhone; all devices have been tested with pre-release software. Battery life depends on usage, configuration, cellular network, signal strength and many other factors; actual results may vary.

Apple plans to introduce a power-saving mode in watchOS 9 that will work on all Apple Watch models starting with Series 4. With Energy Saver mode, the watch will disable or limit features including the always-on display, automatic workout detection, and heart health notifications.

The Apple Watch Ultra also has a specific battery optimization feature that needs to be configured for maximum battery life, and this feature will be introduced later in the year.

Once this feature is introduced, the Apple Watch Ultra’s battery will last for a whopping 60 hours and will be the first Apple Watch to offer more than 24 hours of battery life to allow people to spend multiple days without recharging the device.

Apple says the range over multiple days of hiking is calculated based on the following use in Power Saving mode and with training settings that reduce the heart rate and GPS location readings.

The company used these metrics, over a 60-hour span, to test the feature:

  • 15 hours of training;
  • over 600-time checks;
  • 35 minutes of app use;
  • 3 minutes of conversation;
  • 15 hours of sleep monitoring.

Standard Series 8 and Apple Watch SE models continue to offer 18 hours of battery life, which can go up to 36 hours by enabling the new power-saving mode.

Power saving mode will be introduced with ‌ watchOS 9‌ on September 12, while battery optimization doesn’t have a specific launch date yet. The Apple Watch Ultra is available for pre-order starting last night and will be released on September 23rd.
