The new version of macOS Catalina introduces the new battery integrity management functionality
Apple has released the second beta version of macOS Catalina 10.15.5 for developers, an update that includes a major change in the way macOS handles MacBook charging .
The new feature aims to improve the long-term battery status of a MacBook.
Jason Snell of Six Colors reported this new feature for the first time. The goal of the change is “to reduce the chemical aging rate of the MacBook battery, thus prolonging its long-term life “.
For example, if we keep our MacBook connected most of the time, the battery integrity management functionality will start to prevent the device from fully charging . The new feature is only available on MacBooks that load via Thunderbolt 3 , not MagSafe.
And of course, Apple has made privacy a staple of this new battery integrity management feature. The company claims that all charging data is kept on the device unless the user chooses to share it with the company.
Finally, Apple is enabling the battery integrity management function by default, but users can disable it by unchecking the new dedicated box in System Preferences, in the Energy Saver category.
This is similar to the battery management features that have arrived on the iPhone in the past two years. On iPhone, Apple allows users to manage battery status and capacity and to disable performance limitation caused by reduced battery capacity . iOS 13 has also silently added a new optimized battery charging feature, which aims to extend the iPhone’s battery life to reduce the rate at which the battery remains at 100% charge.
