The company patents a new, stronger friction hinge system for the foldable iPhone.

Apple continues to file a number of patents related to a foldable iPhone, with the latest revealing that the company is looking for a method to make the hinges stronger.

In the new patent application ” Electronic Devices With Fiber Composite Friction Hinges “, Apple proposes to build stronger hinges that could be used not only for folding devices but “finger devices” (yes, Apple has filed some related patents of smart rings ).

Here is the description of the patent:

The fibers in the composite material can be incorporated into a polymeric binder. Fibers can wrap around holes and fold in on themselves. The ends can be wrapped in additional fibers.

Such a hinge can allow portions to rotate towards each other or move away from the axis of the hinge. According to Apple, this solution will greatly improve the strength of the hinge, making it more durable.

This is just one of a number of many patents related to a foldable iPhone that Apple recently filed with the USPTO.

It now seems certain that the company is making a foldable iPhone, which could hit the market in 1-2 years.
