Apple made it clear that iOS 14.5 doesn’t actually allow users to set a third-party music streaming service as the default.
As we all know, iOS 14.5 includes a feature that allows users to select a specific music service to use with Siri, such as Spotify.
The feature is based on Siri’s intelligence, which means it can improve and even change over time as Siri learns to better understand our listening habits.
For example, if we ask Siri to play a song, album or artist, it may ask us which service we want to use to listen to this type of content. However, our answer does not make that particular service the “default”.
Apple also points out that there is no specific setting in iOS where users can configure a “default” music service, as is the case with email and browser apps.
More generally, the feature is an attempt to help Siri learn our musical and non-musical habits. For example, he may learn that we prefer to listen to music on Spotify and audiobooks and podcasts on the Apple Podcast app.
The feature, of course, doesn’t prevent users from requesting a particular service by name, even if it’s not their usual preference. For example, we can still ask Siri to “play smooth jazz radio on Pandora”.
