The analyst has no doubts. The new MacBook Pro models arriving in the second half of this year will be equipped with the SD card reader, HDMI port and more.

Apple plans to release two new MacBook Pro models equipped with an HDMI port and SD card reader in the second half of 2021, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who outlined his expectations in a new research note.

“We anticipate that the two new MacBook Pro 2021 models will have several significant design and specification changes, including an SD card reader and HDMI port,” Kuo wrote.

Last month, Kuo shared his expectations for new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models arriving later this year, including the return of the MagSafe charging connector, the removal of the Touch Bar, a new design to flat edges and the return of multiple ports built into notebooks for greater connectivity.

The latest MacBook Pro models only have Thunderbolt ports, forcing users to use an adapter or dock to connect an SD card to the machine.

In his previous research note, Kuo said that “most users may not need to purchase additional dongles for the next MacBook Pro,” so it’s possible that an SD card reader isn’t the only port that will return.

The analyst expects the new MacBook Pro models to launch in the third quarter of 2021, which runs from July to September. They would replace the current high-end 13-inch and 16-inch models released in May 2020 and November 2019 respectively.

Additionally, Kuo said that Taiwan’s Genesys Logic will be the exclusive supplier of the SD card reader in the 2021 MacBook Pro models.

Finally, Kuo predicts that overall MacBook shipments will grow between 25% and 30% year-over-year with the new design and spec changes, reaching 20 million units in 2021.
