After several missteps, BOE has finally managed to successfully pass Apple’s rigorous tests and will be one of the leading suppliers of OLED screens for iPhone 13 models.
According to a new report, manufacturer BOE will be a major supplier of OLED displays for iPhone 13 models. BOE is working with manufacturer General Interface Solution (GIS), part of the Hon Hai group to develop the displays.
Last year, it was rumored that BOE would supply displays for iPhone 12 models, but unfortunately it ran into serious manufacturing issues. In June, in fact, the manufacturer was unable to deliver the first shipment of OLEd displays to Apple, as they did not pass the company’s validation tests.
Ultimately, Apple again had to rely on Samsung Display to supply OLED displays for the iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max and 12 mini, while LG Display made those for the standard iPhone 12 models.
Economic Daily News suggests that BOE’s position in Apple’s supply chain has improved and its OLED technology is now “closer to that of major South Korean manufacturers.” The site also claims that BOE has now completed certification tests and is producing a small number of iPhone 12 displays.
The iPhone 13 displays are expected to be technically more difficult to manufacture due to Apple’s switch to LTPO technology , thanks to which future iPhone models will support a refresher rate up to 120Hz.
The iPhone 13 range is expected to be identical to the iPhone 12 range, which is made up of four models of 6.1, 5.4 and 6.7 inches. However, only Pro models should adopt displays with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
