During the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, BMW and Apple announced that BMW will become the first car maker to allow its customers to use the iPhone as a vehicle key.
During the WWDC20 keynote, Apple announced CarKey , a new feature designed to allow the addition of digital keys to the Wallet app, allowing you to use iPhones and Apple Watch models in place of a physical car key.
During the presentation of the feature, the company said it would arrive on both iOS 13 and iOS 14, and the first automaker to support CarKey, BMW, today added support for the feature to its BMW Connected app . With support for car keys, a BMW digital key for iPhone can be added to the Wallet app on iPhone.
The BMW Digital Key for the iPhone will allow you to open and close the car by pointing the iPhone towards the door handle and to start the engine by placing the iPhone on the smartphone holder. In addition, the car owner can share access with up to 5 people. The Digital Key will also be available on the Apple Watch . The installation of the digital key can be completed via the BMW Connected app, while the digital key is saved in the Wallet app after configuration.
The BMW Digital Key for iPhone function works with numerous BMW models: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M and Z4 if produced after 1 July 2020. Vehicles compatible will be shown in the vehicle tab in the app.
