Apple’s global iPhone shipments declined year-over-year in the first quarter of 2020, but the decline was not as severe as the drops in other major smartphone manufacturers during a period influenced by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to new data shared by Gartner , iPhone sales decreased by 8% in the first quarter of 2020.

In the quarter, Apple sold around 40.92 million smartphones , a decrease of 3.7 million compared to 44.57 million sold in the first quarter of 2019.

Other smartphone manufacturers have seen much more marked declines in sales. Sales of Samsung , for example, have decreased by 22.7 percent and sales of Huawei have decreased by 27.3 percent . Xiaomi was the only smartphone manufacturer that recorded a slight increase in sales , with the overall smartphone market falling by 20.2%.

Gartner analyst Annette Zimmermann explained that Apple has been helped by its strong start in 2020 , based on the success of the iPhone 11 series.

“If COVID-19 hadn’t occurred, the vendor would likely have seen its iPhone sales hit record highs in the quarter,” said Zimmermann. “Apple’s ability to serve customers through its online stores and its production that returned to near-normal levels in late March helped to recover some of the initial positive moment.”

In April, Apple shared earnings results for the second fiscal quarter of 2020, which corresponds to the first quarter of the year. Apple posted revenues of $ 58.5 billion , up slightly from $ 58 billion in revenue in the second fiscal quarter of 2019.
