We may have to wait until 2022 to get new Emojis on our devices.

The Unicode Consortium announced today that it will postpone the launch of version 14 of Unicode Standar for six months due to the impact of the ongoing pandemic. This means that the next version of Unicode Standard will be released in September 2021. The Unicode consortium announced today that it will postpone the launch of version 14 of Unicode Standar for six months due to the impact of the ongoing pandemic. This means that the next version of Unicode Standard will be released in September 2021.

As explained by Jeremy Burge on Twitter, this means that the new emojis introduced in version 14 will not arrive on the main platforms before 2022 . The new emojis generally arrive on iOS and Android in the fall, so this delay postpones the release of six months, probably from autumn 2021 to spring 2022.

In particular, developers are given a good margin of time to incorporate the new Unicode version into their respective products, such as the Apple iPhone. For example, version 13 of Unicode Standard, announced in March, will arrive on the iPhone along with iOS 14.

New emoji coming in with Unicode version 13.0

The plan change has no impact on the current version 13, which means that the 117 new emojis previewed in January are expected to be available later this year.

The consortium is also investigating the feasibility of releasing an update that integrates emoji sequences. The black cat of version 13, for example, is a sequence that combines the emoji of the cat and that of the black square. Since the sequences are based on existing code and characters , Unicode may be able to release a small update in 2021.
