Instagram launches new tools against fake news and hate speeches globally
Facebook has already been involved in various disputes being accused of allowing users to easily share fake news and hate messages on social networks.
The company announced a series of measures to avoid this problem, but they were valid only for the famous social network. Starting today, Instagram – which is owned by Facebook – will also have new tools against misinformation and hate speech.
“We want you to trust what you see on Instagram. Photo and video based disinformation is increasingly a challenge in our industry and something our teams have focused on how to deal with it, “the company said in a statement.
With the help of fact control agencies, Instagram will analyze the content published on the social network to determine whether they are truthful.
The program had already been tested with some users in the United States and has now been released globally. Whenever a photo or video reported as false news appears on the feed, Instagram will display a warning above it. Users can still choose to view the content regardless of the alerts .
It will also be possible to see the comments of the verification agencies on that post and the app will ask if the user really wants to share the post anyway. The company claims to use artificial intelligence technology so that any content already reported as misinformation is recognized even when it is republished by another account.
In a related statement , Facebook stated that the Instagram app will also detect and warn bullying and hate comments.
“Today, when someone writes a caption for a post and our IA detects that it is potentially offensive, they will receive a message informing them that their caption is similar to the one reported for bullying. They will have the opportunity to modify it before it is published. “
These features are already visible to some users in the latest version of the Instagram app.
