At Mobile World Congress 2017, Huawei and Vodafone in partnership with Audi, held the first demonstration in Europe of mobile technology that allows the connection between cars, people and road infrastructure, to increase security and ensure a better driving experience. Focused on new technology Cellular V2X (C-V2X), the live demonstration was held at the famous Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
As part of the process of evolution of 4G to 5G, the new C-V2X technology allows the rapid exchange of information between vehicles and other road infrastructure by deploying an evolution of driving patterns, improving safety, traffic management and road efficiency . This demonstration follows the successful trial conducted by Huawei, Vodafone and Bosch on C-V2X connections to 5.9 GHz at the A9 motorway in Germany, last February.
Guests of the demonstration were invited to get on board of Audi vehicles equipped with C-V2X technology as passengers, and have witnessed how the interconnected vehicles can improve the driving experience in four aspects:
- Visibility – Vehicles interconnected receiving a video signal from a vehicle in front in situations where you may want better visibility of traffic, the confluent roads or other critical situations to be addressed.
- Alert traffic light – the driver is warned in advance about the changes of the traffic lights, thus being able to predict when to slow down.
- Alert pedestrians – thanks to mobile connectivity, you can warn vehicles of the near crosswalks, even before they are visible to the sensors or the driver.
Emergency Brake – an algorithm will determine whether there is a risk that other vehicles interconnected suddenly curb or lane change, by activating an alarm to alert the driver.
As evidenced by this test, direct communication between vehicles of technology based C-V2X lays the groundwork for future improvements to the automated driving.

On the occasion of this revolutionary demonstration, Vodafone has installed a mobile radio, high-performance network for data transmission to the circuit cover, while Huawei has provided radio modules built into cars and the update of the base station communication technology.
