Consumer Reports named the Apple Watch its top-rated smartwatch. The company tested 11 of the most popular and recent smartwatches over the last few weeks for durability, health functionality, readability in bright and low light, ease of use, and ease of interaction.

The company put the smartwatches through a scratch-resistance test using picks calibrated to the Mohs scale, which uses 10 minerals of increasing hardness as reference points. The stainless-steel Apple Watch survived a number 9 Mohs pick (just below diamond hardness), thanks to its sapphire crystal display glass.

To test water resistance, Consumer Reports used a depth-test chamber that can be pressurized to simulate any depth up to 230 feet. The Apple Watch conforms to IPX7 under IEC standard 60529, which means it should be able to withstand submersion in 3.3 feet of water for 30 minutes. Setting the depth chamber to match the specifications claimed by each manufacturer, they tested the smartwatches immediately after submersion then 24 hours later. The Apple Watch passed on the first try but the Apple Watch Sport failed on 24 hours later test. However, consumer reports tried two additional samples which both passed.

The only smartwatch to fail the water-resistance test was the Sony SmartWatch 3. The device failed to function properly after being submerged for 30 minutes at 3.3 feet. A second sample also failed the test.

”In the end, our top-rated smartwatch is the stainless-steel Apple Watch. Its performance on the scratch-resistance test and excellent scores for ease of pairing and ease of interaction make it our top choice.”

Though there has been a lot smartwatches in the market for almost two years, with samsung releasing more than three smart watches they were not able to match up with Apple ubiquitous smart watch.
