Autofocus can improve focus during FaceTime video calls.
According to ET News, the iPhone 14 models will be equipped with a more expensive “high-end” front-facing camera with autofocus.
Specifically, the front camera of the iPhone range will be produced by LG Innotek, a South Korean company, and by the Japanese Sharp. Apple previously planned to use LG Innotek’s cameras starting with the iPhone 15 range but had to revise its plans as it reclassified the front-facing camera as a ‘high-end’ component, as well as quality issues with Chinese suppliers.
IT News reports that the unit cost of the iPhone 14’s front-facing cameras has risen nearly three times over previous models due to new features like autofocus.
Previously, the trusted Kuo stated that all four iPhone 14 models will be equipped with an upgraded front camera with autofocus and a ƒ / 1.9 aperture.
A wider aperture would allow more light to pass through the lens and reach the front camera sensor, resulting in improved image quality. Additionally, Kuo added that these camera updates could provide a better depth of field effect for photos and videos in Portrait mode, while autofocus can improve focus during FaceTime video calls.
In comparison, the front camera of all iPhone 13 models has a fixed focus and a smaller ƒ / 2.2 aperture.
