All three iPhone 2020s could adopt OLED technology, but “two models will have better displays”.
Apple plans to release a 5.4-inch iPhone and a 6.7-inch iPhone with thinner OLED displays in 2020, according to ETNews .
The report states that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models will adopt a Samsung technology called Y-OCTA that allows touchscreen circuits to be modeled directly on the OLED panel without the need for a separate layer, resulting in a thinner display and lower production costs.
It is unclear whether the thinnest display technology would translate into overall thinner iPhones next year. In particular, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are actually slightly thicker and heavier than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, respectively, as Apple has added larger batteries to the new devices.
Samsung will supply Y-OCTA displays to Apple for both the 5.4-inch iPhone and the 6.7-inch model, while the low-cost 6.1-inch model will stick to the traditional Samsung OLED displays and LG, the report adds. Chinese display manufacturer BOE may no longer be available as a supplier for iPhone 2020.
2020 should be a great year for the iPhone, with rumors indicating the two new display sizes mentioned above, a redesigned metal structure similar to the iPhone 4, 3D detection facing back, 5G support and up to 6 GB of RAM .
Numerous reports have claimed that Apple eventually plans to release an iPhone with Face ID and Touch ID below the screen , although it is not clear if the device will arrive in 2020 or 2021. The Touch ID below the screen would potentially allow users to authenticate placing a finger anywhere on the display.
Apple’s plans to release 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhones by 2020 are supported by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and others.
