After rumors and rumors, here is finally the Apple branded device to find keys and more.
“Lose the habit of losing things,” writes Apple on its website. At the Spring Loaded event, the Californian company presented the device to never lose sight of your things .
Found it!
Lost your wallet? No problem with AirTag. Just open the new Objects panel of the Find Me app and play the speaker built into the AirTag. Or you can simply say: “Hey Siri, find my wallet”. If it is nearby, for example under the sofa or in the next room, just follow the sound to find it.
If the AirTag is nearby, the “Precise Location” feature on the iPhone can guide you to the exact spot where it is. Thanks to Ultra Wideband technology you will see the direction to follow and the exact distance.
The “Precise Position” function is compatible with:
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
Where is it
If something has been left in a distant place, for example in the park or in the gym, you can still locate your AirTag using the Where is network : it is made up of hundreds of millions of iPhones, iPads and Macs around the world, and is a system designed to keep privacy safe at all times.
How does it work
The AirTag sends a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by devices on the Where’s closest network. These devices send the location of the AirTag to iCloud – when you open the Find My app, you will see it on the map. The whole operation takes place anonymously and encrypted, to protect privacy. And it’s super-efficient too, so you don’t have to worry about running out of battery or running out of data.
Lost Mode: Just like on other Apple devices, Lost Mode can also be activated on AirTag. This way, if the AirTag is detected by a device in the network, you will be notified automatically. You can also choose to show your contact information when someone touches the AirTag with a smartphone equipped with NFC technology (the same one used to pay with the phone).
What about privacy?
Only the owner can see where his AirTag is , which does not store any data or location history. Not only that: the devices that detect and transmit the position of the AirTag do so anonymously and encrypted. So even Apple doesn’t know where the AirTag is or the identity of the devices that help find it.
AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking . If another person’s AirTag accidentally ends up in someone else’s things, the iPhone notices that it is moving with a different owner and warns. After a while, if it has not yet been found, the AirTag will start ringing to be heard.
What if you are with someone who has an AirTag with them? Or maybe on a train with a lot of people who have one? No problem: these alerts are activated only when the AirTag moves away from the person it belongs to.
Other characteristics
Battery : AirTag is designed to run over a year on a regular battery, which can be easily replaced. And the iPhone will tell when it’s time to change it.
Water resistance: AirTag hooked to house keys and then, oops! They fall into a puddle. Don’t panic: AirTag is water resistant.
